Bride and groom stand under a tree with glowing lanterns at night, surrounded by colorful flowers, creating a romantic, dreamy atmosphere.

In most western cultures, astrology is considered entertainment at best, as daily horoscopes are about the extent of astrological information that the typical person reads. In Asian and Hindu cultures, however, no major event is scheduled without consulting an astrologer. Why not play it safe, even if you're on the fence about the accuracy of astrology? After all, India's Supreme Court ruled that astrology is indeed a science.

There's not going to be a perfect date, and if it does miraculously exist, it's probably a Tuesday at 3:00 a.m., haha. That said, picking the best date for your wedding involves actually finding the least-worst date. Chances are, you're going to pick a weekend, and most couples have a particular season that they prefer to be married in, like Spring or Fall. You'll find that you are left with a smattering of choices, so once you have your dates narrowed down to a handful that work for you, here are the next steps, astrologically, to consider before plunking down that big deposit.

  1. Avoid Mercury retrogrades, and even the shadow phases leading up to and after the retrograde. These happen three times a year.

  2. Avoid Venus retrograde dates. You do not want the planet of love to appear to be moving backward in the sky when you say your vows.

  3. Avoid a malefic as the chart ruler for a wedding. A chart ruler is the planet that is ruled by the chart's rising sign, which is the constellation located on the eastern horizon at the time of your wedding. Aries, which rules Mars; Scorpio which rules Pluto; Capricorn which rules Saturn, and Aquarius, which rules Uranus, are not ideal rising signs for weddings.

  4. Eliminate days where the Moon, which rules emotions, is void-of-course.

  5. A day when the Moon makes a good angle (a conjunction, sextile or trine) to Venus is a plus.

  6. A day when the Moon makes any of these above three beneficial angles to the ruler of the Seventh House is helpful, as the Seventh House rules partnerships.

  7. Avoid dates where transits may activate malefic planets (Mars, Saturn, Uranus, or Pluto) in your or your partner's natal chart.

  8. Look for a good ascendant. For instance, Taurus and Libra are great, because they are both ruled by Venus, the planet of Love. Cancer is a good bet, as it's ruled by the Moon.

  9. Check where key planets like the Moon, Venus, and Saturn (he rules commitment) will be located, and whether they are in their domicile (ruling signs) or exalted. These placements are ideal.

  10. Get an "electional chart" drawn up by an astrologer. This is a horoscope cast for a specific time to initiate a wedding (or any event) in order to maximize the most successful outcome -- in this case, your marriage.

I realize that these tips may seem technical for the non-astrologer. I have been studying astrology since the 80s, so contact me for more help, and I can run an electional chart to help you choose the best date for your wedding.
